Frozen faces, terrified eyes, and broken breaths… Amidst a state of shock and horror, a strong and terrifying feeling swept through the Suwayda Governor-ate after waking up to a tragedy that befell a 19-year-old girl. She became a victim of a society’s ignorance and her family’s betrayal. Sidra, whose young age did not spare her from being married off early and raising her child alone after her husband abandoned his responsibilities, at a time when she should have been in school playing with her friends.
Sidra Ghraiz Aldin, bound with a rope by her 17-year-old brother in cooperation with their mother, in front of her four-year-old daughter, was brutally killed (slaughtered) with a sharp blade by her brother’s hands. This heinous act was carried out coldly, ending her life due to family disputes and what he claimed as “honor cleansing.” What kind of honor targets innocent lives and shatters hearts? The true dishonor lies in the hands of her killer.
The murdered girl is a victim of early marriage, oppressive motherhood, and an honor killing… Three issues that paint a painful picture of the injustice and oppression faced by girls and women in our society repeatedly, through various forms of threats, extortion, and psychological breakdowns. The fate of the victim’s life becomes a decision in the hands of the oppressors.
Let us not forget her child, who also did not escape society’s cruelty. This same child was found abandoned in a city neighborhood two years ago, according to a local media source. She was taken to the national hospital, and many families tried to adopt her. However, Sidra did not abandon her and returned for her, only for her daughter to witness this bloody crime today.
In the end, whether it is a crime under the pretext of honor or otherwise, merely committing such an act represents a major challenge to society and the law. It calls for us to stand by the future victim’s project, working to bring about change by responsibly protecting human rights and standing against any violation of human dignity.
As Aman Platform, we urge all international and local human rights organisations, with their immense capacity to influence and bring change, to genuinely address the issues of oppression faced by women. We call on them to touch reality by raising awareness about the importance of women’s rights, providing psychological and legal support to women suffering from violations, and offering safe shelters and protection for them.
