Who we are:

We constitute a group of non-violent activists from Syria. Whether through our direct experiences or those of our loved ones, who have faced arrest and disappearance, we believe it’s our obligation to actively address this issue and keep their voices alive. Our focus is on promoting awareness of legal and human rights concerning enforced disappearance and detention. Additionally, we provide direct consultations to the families of detainees and victims of enforced disappearances, regardless of the entity responsible for their arrest or concealment.

Our organisation was established to honour the memory of Bassel Khartabil Safadi, a Syrian-Palestinian activist and programmer. Arrested by the Military Security in March 2012, he was executed by the Military Field Court in October 2015. Bassel conceived the idea of the organisation and selected its name before his demise. We heavily relied on the efforts that led to the “FREEBASSEL” campaign.

What we do:

The primary goal of the organisation is to offer direct legal support and assistance to detainees, their families, and especially women in Syria, Lebanon, and Turkey. Our focus lies in empowering individuals regarding fundamental human rights connected to detention, enforced disappearance, torture, ill-treatment, the death penalty, and the various legal, procedural, human rights, and administrative implications stemming from these violations. Our approach emphasises gender equality and gives priority to the rights and freedoms of women. This is particularly relevant for women in neighbouring countries who might not be activists but are significantly impacted by the Syrian conflict. They might experience direct detention, enforced disappearance, or have family members who do. We aim to challenge stereotypes related to women’s roles, all while respecting cultural, social, and religious beliefs, political opinions, as well as identities and sexual orientations in a manner that fosters diversity.
